AbstractThe recent global proliferation of the World Wide Web(WWW) with its inherent flexibility and multi capabilities makes it a very attractive platform for developing collaborative applications required for Concurrent Engineering (C.E.). The efficacy of Concurrent Engineering relies on the provision of the right information at the right place and at the right time. Despite the rapid advances in Information Technology (LT.), knowledge on the availability of information is not readily available. Moreover it is still very difficult to access information produced by different applications. The latter is due to hardware and software incompatibilities of manufacturing and information processing equipment. The lack of knowledge of information availability presents a major drawback in the use of real time operational wisdom and thereby prevents its use in decision making. This thesis is a preliminary step in the attempt to use WWW technologies for C.E. applications. It strives to model the information needed and produced and the constraints applied to them as well as their processing, and the resources and organizational aspects relevant in the course of an particular enterprise's operation. The Computer Integrated Manufacturing Open System Architecture process model is used for the process. A job shop type manufacturing setup is selected for modeling purposes and the information flow between its various business processes are modeled with respect to the function, information , resource and organization views, in line with the CIMOSA methodology. Subsequently, based on the information model developed, a software model of an application software integration mechanism that promotes usage of groupware tools in an Concurrent Engineering setup could be built.
