Abstract | In conventional building design, the architectural cladding panel and the structural frame are isolated and interaction is minimized between the two. The present study incorporates full height cladding panels into the structural system and the interaction between them is consid- ered. The cladding panel gives additional stiffness to the building by acting as a brace and also provides energy dissipation through the specially designed connection. In this study, the special connection includes a viscoelastic damper mounted in upper corner of the cladding panel; thereby making the cladding system into an "Energy Dissipating Cladding System CEDCS)". The study tested the feasibility of EDCS in retrofitting application with installation of EDCS in 2 central bays of 15 story 4 bay steel moment frame designed for low intensity earthquake; the installation of EDCS in this configuration led to over-stressing of interior columns. The paper also presents the design procedure for EDCS in steel moment frame for drift control. Sensitivity analysis was done on the EDCS fitted frame by varying the stiffness of the VED in EDCS and its seismic performance is compared. The comparison between frame fitted with EDCS and viscoelastic damper in diagonal bracing configuration was studied and the EDCS system was found to exert less stress on the building frame while achieving similar level of drift control. |
