AbstractStructural engineers consider the earthquake effects on designing the buildings. They try to isolate the architectural precast concrete panels from the structure in order to reduce the in- teraction with supporting structure so the damage will be minimized. This study develops an energy dissipating cladding system (EDCS) that is capable of functioning both as a structural brace as well as like a source of energy dissipation. The EDCS is designed to provide added stiffness and damping to building with steel moment resisting frames. This study focus on the full height precast concrete cladding panels. The preliminary design of the EDCS was based on the existing guidelines and research data on architectural precast concrete cladding and supplemental energy dissipating device. The energy dissipating device for this study is friction damper. From the results, the EDCS system was found out that it is effective in re- ducing the story drift through the combined action of added stiffness and energy dissipation. The results also vary depending on the earthquake too.
