Abstract | The purpose of this present study is to minimize the damages of non-structural components by developing new innovative ways of energy dissipating cladding system incorporating fric- tion dampers in 20-story 3 bays with 60 and 24 friction dampers. The energy dissipating cladding panels can work as both structural brace and energy dissipation. The aims of de- signing new earthquake resistant design is to minimize the non-structural precast concrete panels interaction with the structural members and hence reduce the damages. Earthquakes are unpredictable natural hazard. To save thousands of lives and economic losses, energy dissipating devices like friction dampers are used to design buildings stiffer and stronger, to resist the earthquake force and to dissipate the energy. In this study, the site location of seven earthquakes is chosen as Los Angeles, California. EDCS is designed to provide added stiffness and damping to buildings. From the results of added the 60 and 24 friction dampers on 20-story building which is discussed in Chapter 4, the energy dissipating cladding system incorporating friction dampers was very effective in reducing story drift. |
