Abstract | In this study, the application of the energy dissipation cladding panel system (EDCS) to a structure is conducted to find out the seismic response of the building under earthquake excitations in terms of four parameters; story drift, story displacement, story shear and story acceleration. The study building is 12-story having 5 bays. The seven earthquakes in Los Angeles were chosen to perform the nonlinear time history analysis because the study area is California which is a well-known earthquake region. The comparison between the EDCS and the ordinary moment frame (OMF) is carried out in two cases (60 damper cases and 24 damper cases). The selection of the slip load Skips, 10 kips, 15 kips and 20 kips are the key parameter for this study. The excessive use of dampers in the building also cause the dampers not to slip properly during earthquake excitation. In other words, the activated damper does not slip sufficiently to dissipate the input energy because of the added stiffness. It caused the higher story shear and story acceleration of the building. Nevertheless, the application of the EDCS to a building has the better performance and energy dissipation. Besides, the EDCS can also be applied as retrofit the existing OMF that is not designed under earthquake excitations. |
