AbstractShort Message Service (SMS) is a teleservice that has been used worldwide in GSM network. Presently there are many applications of Short Message Service such as advanced two-way paging service, Electronic Mail, Internet service, credit cards authentication, computer-based messageing and remote monitoring. Short Message Service is transfered on the signalling channel, sharing load with signalling traffic of voice. Signalling traffic of voice service in GSM are call set-up, handover and location update signallings. When the demand for mobile access to SMS is increased, SMS may impact either performance of voice service or performance of SMS as well. Therefore the effect of Short Message Service on the signalling traffic in GSM network is studied. The parameters that are used to investigate into these effects are delay, blocking probability, and throughput. The simulation results show that the increase in the number of SMS per one attempt with the long message length effects on the exitsing signalling traffic. Therefore the signalling system design, in addition to, the SMS arrival rate, the number of SMS per one attempt should be considered as well.
