AbstractThe recent advances in digital network technologies have resulted in the integration of different media. Improvements in digital computer technologies are gradually making it practical to interact not only text, graphics, and images, which are traditional computer media, but also with audio and video. Integrated networks of the near future are expected to provide a wide variety of services, which could consume widely different amount of resources. The allocation of resources to different heterogeneous services and to charge them fairly and accurately is still an open question. It seems inevitable that some changes or additions are needed in the control mechanism used to allocate usage of the network resources. Pricing can be used as a tool in the control mechanism to help achieve both network and economic efficiency. The dynamic and responsive pricing algorithm can be a workable tool to aid network operators in controlling the broadband traffic. In this thesis different pricing schemes are reviewed and an algorithm is proposed. The proposed scheme is based on pricing bandwidth to reflect network utilization, with users competing for resources according to their individual bandwidth valuation. Pricing the bandwidth instead of services, makes this approach flexible to accommodate future services as well as current existing services. Users are assumed to place a benefit on bandwidth they are assigned by the network. The network constraints are used to drive prices for the bandwidths which induce user to share the limited network resources according to their benefit functions. This formulation leads to a distributed pricing algorithm, which is integrated with the problem of assigning capacities on the virtual path connecting ATM switches such that physical capacities constraints are satisfied. The proposed scheme also induces fairness among the users and forces them to declare correct traffic descriptors. The algorithm is modeled and simulated. Three types of source models; data, video and voice are used and results are analyzed to investigate the workability and efficiency of algorithm. The algorithm can also be used for traffic management in a Virtual Path Network (VPN) in which one entity controls all the users.
