Abstract | Software defined communication systems, unlike traditional communication systems, can be easily reprogrammed and reconfigured through software. Field programmable gate ar ray (FPGA) devices are widely used in digital signal processing (DSP) and software defined communications as they are user friendly and reprogrammable. Pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) is a basic baseband modulation for digital transmission, and is a basis for passband quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM). The main objective of this project is to develop a bit error rate (BER) testing system that can work with PAM transmissions. Forhardware, Terasic’s DE0 Development and Education boards, which are equipped with Altera’s Cy clone III 3C16 FPGA chips, are used to together with digital-to-analog converter (DAC) and analog-to-digital converter (ADC) boards developed in Bangkok University-Center of Research in Optoelectronics, Communications, and Control Systems (BU-CROCCS). For software, Verilog programming is used to configure the FPGAs. The developed can be used for laboratory sessions of the course on digital communications. |
