AbstractVisible light communication (VLC) has been an attractive subject for indoor applications in recent years. VLC uses light at the visible frequencies to transmit data. However, when the channel is dispersive, the transmitted signal will be distorted because of various channel effects leading to a high bit error rate (BER). To control the BER, one main method is using a pulse shaping filter. In this research, rectangular and square-root raise cosine (SRRC) pulse shapes are compared based on their BERs with and without equalization at the receiver. Two modulation schemes are considered, namely binary pulse amplitude modulation (2-PAM) and quaternary PAM (4-PAM). Numerical results indicate that SRRC pulse shaping gives a lower BER for VLC for all possible conditions, especially when equalization is applied at the receiver.
