Abstract | In 21st Century, Climate change is biggest challenge in the whole world. The earth covered with trees, bushes and green plants now decertified due to increment of population and urbanization. As a result, the quality of water has deteriorated. Water Quality is determined by characteristics of physical, chemical and biological parameters in water. Mahaweli River in Sri Lanka is known as the longest river and serves water for drinking, generation of hydropower, agriculture and industrial activities of the region. It identified as the major water source of Central Province, North Central Province and Eastern Province in Sri Lanka and the river covers the land area about 16%. This research aims to study the water quality alter with change in climate and influence from natural and anthropogenic activities due to globalization by analyzing selected water quality parameters. Turbidity, Conductivity and PH are the selected parameters used to identify the water quality and data was collected in the period between 2002 and 2016. And trend analysis method is used to analyze variation of water quality on rainfall and temperature. Five water quality stations along the Mahaweli River and two rainfall gauge stations where located in premises of Kandy (Capital of Central Province) are selected to get data for this research. The river originates from many tributary streams but due to poor catchment management and settlements near vicinity of Mahaweli River, Quality of water has deteriorated. Only few researches have conducted the water quality of Mahaweli River. In conclusion, Analyzing water quality in past may help to predict water quality in future and This study would be important to improve the aqua ecosystem in Mahaweli River. |
