AbstractThe increased globalization of industry is causing an acceleration in the pace of product change. This trend is forcing engineers and engineering managers to respond with products that have increasingly lower costs, better quality and shorter development times. Concurrent Engineering emerged to adopt that trend that allowed ones to shorten product development and dramatically improve the manufacturing. Information technology plays an important role to make Concurrent Engineering successful. Especially, collaborative working is one of the key elements of Concurrent Engineering. Many efforts have been made in this field. However, there is no general collaboration environment supporting Concurrent Engineering that can be applied to a wide range of product development. This research suggests a prototype for building a system to support Concurrent Engineering through development of a small collaboration environment with some facilicies, for example the abilities of browsing CAD/CAM data exchange files, retrieving data from spreadsheet files, or accessing to relational database systems. This work also demonstrates how some new information technologies lent themselves well to the development of such a system.
