Abstract | The globalization has demanded well developed freight transportation system in greater intensity across the globe. The Cross-border freight transportation has become the most important part of this industry adding significant values to the economic development of any country bounded to neighbour countries by land borders. Even though, the demand for cross border freight transportation has grown significantly in ASEAN region during past few decades, only few studies on the cost variation of cross border freight transportation in different transportation routes have been done. Therefore, this study fulfil this timely requirement and make recommendations about the industry in general and specifically, cost variations with different transportation route configurations. In the study, the Thailand was considered as the origin and the data collection was done by field survey. The data analysis was done in three different frameworks such as descriptive analysis, cost analysis, and finally the SWOT analysis. Descriptive analysis was focused mainly on company profile with its capacity, level of resource inputs, and process configurations etc. The cost analysis comprises comparison of total cost, direct cost, indirect cost, and finally the comparison of per kilometre unit cost. The SWOT analysis was done in two different levels, such as company perspective and industry perspective in broader form. Lastly the comparison of the cross-border freight transportation industry in ASEAN region was done with the European region. The aim of this comparison was to make some recommendations to develop the freight transportation industry in ASEAN region. At the end of study, few observations were fixed with regard to per kilometre average unit cost of different routes. Accordingly, it was learnt that the average unit cost is not simply depend on the length of the route but it depends on few other factors such as the cross-border charges, toll fee polices, and the trade agreements signed between respective countries for example, Thailand - Malaysia transportation route is applied the average least unit cost while Thailand - Cambodia route is applied the average least total cost among other routes. Some companies are running with higher indirect costs leading to higher total costs. Such companies need to get improve internal management systems to cut down excessive indirect costs and take the competitive advantage. |
