AbstractLike many developing countries in Southeast Asia, Vietnam also faces urban growth problem. Urban growth consists of two aspects such as population growth and urban expansion. Urban population _growth and urban expansions play significant role in urban planning in which, update information is required at first. Urban planning is an important point to which different kinds of professionals are concerning. Development of new technology when observing subject without contact has alternated the method for studying urban growth. Therefore, information complemented when applying combination process will be helpful in practice. Investigation of combination between various data sources in deriving information from satellite data was studied. Efficiency of that combination process is to improve the accuracy by the ways as increasing number of classes and rising number of channel combination. Number of classes reached 21 from 11 (given by SPOT itself) is a result of that study in Hanoi urban area through combining SPOT and ERS l satellite images. Land use potential assessment is done through Geographic Information System Operation. This is important step for guiding and designing either Master Plan or Proposed Plan in urban planning. Main types of land use in urban area were selected in analysis duration. Existing land use map is the most prominent for consideration in urban planning so that is basis in transportation planning. Hanoi urban growth is an example in investigating application of Remote Sensing and Geographic Information System. Assessing land use potential in urban planning for Hanoi is ultimate purpose for this study. Potential of land is prepared for single use and the final result is combined at the end of process in order to show whole urban land use in their conjunction.
