AbstractA cellular telephone system provides a wireless connection to the PSTN for any user location within the radio range of the system. The telephone users are allowed to move as their ongoing calls are not interrupted by the system. The user mobility effects directly to some traffic and performance parameters which network provider should take into account. Beside the mobility effect, traffic load in practical system variates on time axis. Because of time dependent traffic the system does not reach the stationary state. The nonstationary cellular system is too complex to be modeled by mathematical formula. The real-time information and statistical information of the network traffic are needed for the operator to know the behavior of cellular system. Traffic measurement process is a suitable method to demonstrates or investigate traffic parameters in a practical cellular system. However, nowadays there is still no general and standard concept for traffic measurement process on a cellular mobile network. This thesis work demonstrates the measurement processes in a cellular mobile system. The measurement processes are used to investigate the nonstationary cellular traffic behavior and network performance which are effected by mobility of mobile telephone users. To study traffic measurement on a cellular mobile network, a simulation model of microcellular system and traffic measurement processes are created. The simulation results of carried traffic in microcell is very less effected by mobility but it effects directly to macrocell level which serve only the handover calls. The traffic load can be approximated by a few number of measurement days if it is performed during the high traffic season. The network performance of few minutes window will demonstrate the actual behavior to the customers but this method spend the memory storage very much. The fixed period measurement is also the method to reduce the measurement cost but it can not provide the reliable data in the nonstationary cellular network. Beside this we analyze the offered calling rate from the real statistical data of cellular network in Bangkok. The call volume profiles are quite stable in the morning interval and more fluctuate at the late afternoon.
