AbstractWaterless live transportation of whiteleg shrimp, Penaeus (Litopenaeus) vannamei was investigated under different packing environments. The basic principle used for the live transportation was cold-anesthetization. Best anesthetic temperature and time were also identified for the whiteleg shrimp because the different species respond differently to the cold-anesthetic shocks according to their tolerable limits. When the shrimp undergo cold- anesthetization their metabolic rate reduces gradually. During anesthetization, shrimps become immobile and become tamed well for easy handling. The major challenge during live transportation is the accumulation of ammonia and carbon dioxide in the packing environment. Soda lime as a carbon dioxide scavenger and zeolite as an ammonia scavenger were used to eliminate the issues caused by carbon dioxide and ammonia accumulation. Synthetic foam soaked in cold water was used as the packing medium for control treatment. The packing medium also contained Aloe vera gel, which was tested for its beneficial effects to aid waterless packing and live storage. A thin sheet prepared from Aloe vera gel was embedded with zeolite granules, and soda lime granules as the two treatments. Foam soaked in pH adjusted sodium bicarbonate solution, and foam soaked in aloe vera gel with soda lime and zeolite granules were two other treatments. The survival rate was measured at different time intervals of live storage after cold-anaesthetization. The results of the trials concurred with the previous findings of anesthetic temperature for whiteleg shrimp to be between 11°C and 11.50°C. Exposing the shrimp to this temperature range over an average duration of 23 minutes was found to anesthetize the shrimp. The evidence from this investigation supports the previous findings correlating the storage temperature inside the box with survival rate. The present experiment demonstrated that there was no impact from using soda lime and zeolite on the survival rate of shrimps. It was found that aloe vera gel alone used as packing medium was not appropriate for the live transportation of shrimps. However, live transportation of shrimp can be improved for storage up to 24 hours using foam soaked in aloe vera gel and foam soaked in sodium bicarbonate solution.
