AbstractThis study was performed with the aim of identifying the trends of climatic variables of Kelani River Basin, Sri Lanka. Ten indices, five each related to temperature and precipitation, were selected to analyze the trends. For analysis of spatial distribution in trends, data from six stations were analyzed. Trends were calculated using RClimDex 1.0, which uses Sens slope and Mann- Kendal test for identifying amount, direction and statistical significance of the trends. Time-series and spatial plots were made for exploratory analysis of the trends. Results showed no significant trend in the selected indices, except consecutive dry days (CDD) and diurnal temperature range (DTR). Numbers of consecutive dry days were higher than the number of wet days but consecutive dry days indicated decreasing trends, in the stations Hanwella and Castlereagh suggesting less dryer periods occurred towards the latter part of the period, and dryer periods are directly proportional to temperature. The DTR showed decreasing towards recent years in all the three stations in western part of the basin. It indicates increasing warming during night hours in the western part of the basin.
