AbstractThere are numerous natural hazards that occur frequently in different parts of the world. Earthquake is one of the hazards that result in large scale destruction of peoples lives and livelihoods including infrastructure. Unlike floods or landslides, early warning is not a pre- paredness option for earthquake. However, the impact that an earthquake could potentially cause on society and economy could be reduced by adopting good construction techniques. Proper construction of houses could increase the safety of people. The devastating earthquake of7.8 magnitude in Nepal that occurred on April 25, 2015 killed nearly 9000 people and damaged 1,22,694 residential buildings partially and 1,38,182 resi- dential buildings fully. The priority of the government of Nepal has been on reconstruction efforts for which there is a need to build back better with earthquake resilient houses for the people who have lost everything. The aim of this study is to investigate the design and construction factors that influence an earthquake resilient house and figure out these factors essential for building an earthquake resilient house in Nepal. Primary data for the study was obtained through a survey based on a questionnaire that focused on identified design and construction factors. The survey was filled in by the experts based in Nepal in design and construction field. The response to the survey was evaluated with the secondary data obtained from the house designed and proposed by AIT solutions. The evaluation of the data showed that the factors influencing design and construction of an earthquake resilient house was considered in the proposed new house. Overall, it could be taken as an example for considering all the necessary design and construction factors for an earthquake resilient house.
