AbstractApplication of metallic yielding dampers (MYD) is one of the oldest and renowned mecha- nism used for seismic protection of structures. To reduce the response of the structure, it is important to select the relevant properties of MYD. This research contributes to identify the effect of yielding strength and stiffness of the damper in reducing the story response of the structure under the stated conditions for concentrically braced frame (CBF) of five story ,ten story and twenty story. Therefore this will be a guidance for the future researchers to alter the MYD parameters of yield strength and stiffness to suit their requirements. Principle pur- pose of this study is to identify the optimum model by comparing the story response results obtained by the CBF with the damping device with the story response results obtained by the undamped CBF. Then this study was extended to select the bracing configuration with the best performance from chevron, v and diagonal bracing configurations under the seismic events of San Fernando,Northridge and Lorna Pierta. The designing software used for this analysis is ETABS, which is the mostly used software in seismic designing. According to the previous researches, the stiffness values and the yield strength values are chosen. The values can be altered by increasing the number of plates according to the equations stated in the research paper. From the first comparison it was found that MYD assigned CBF is perform- ing better than the CBF without MYD.From the secondary comparison it was confirmed that chevron bracing gives the best performance in reducing the story response than v-bracing and diagonal bracing when the MYD is assigned to the frame.
