Abstract | In recent years the idea of reducing automobile dependency and finding a solution to the traf- fic congestion problem and introducing sustainable transportation by using transit oriented development (TOD) has gained a major support. Most of the countries are doing researches to find how TOD is applied and implemented and how it is affecting in transit ridership. Research results have shown that people who chose to live in TOD neighborhoods are much likely to use transit more than the people who chose to live in other areas but with same socio economic status. In this study by selecting 8 railway stations in Colombo district factors, which are affecting to railway transit ridership are analyzed using multiple regression analysis. 3 variables are selected as independent variables according to the availability of data. Years of service, population and residential floor area are selected as the factors to be accounted for railway patronage. From the analysis results station characteristics-years of operation is appeared to be the most important factor, which affects the railway patronage. And the combined results of the analysis are concluded from the analysis. Also the relationship status between the dependent variable and independent variable is found from the analysis results. By doing this research, it can identified what TOD characteristics Colombo stations have in order to implement and develop TOD concept in Sri Lanka. |
