AbstractLos Angelis is a major city located in the United States, which is highly prone to earth- quakes. The research aim is fulfilling the design requirements of an Ordinary Concentric braced frame with metallic yielding dampers which is eligible to withstand the earthquakes which happened in San Fernando, Lorna Prieta and Northridge in 1971, 1989 and 1994. Quantitative and qualitative assessment of story displacement, story drift ratio, story shear and story acceleration of 5-story, lO-story and 20 story of 2-D frames were compared. The location parameters were obtained from AISE 7-10. The brace frame of the 2-D structure was designed using Equivalent Static Method. TIme history analysis using ETABS was conducted to detect the response of San Fernando, Lorna Prieta and Northridge earthquakes. According to the AISE 7-10 aforementioned earthquakes were scaled. Dampers were used in-order to minimize the structural damage caused during the earthquakes and to obtain the maximum structural performance during the earthquakes. From past researches six dampers were selected on the basis of their performance. The per- formance of the six selected dampers were analyzed and the best performed one was selected for this study. This selected damper is assigned uniformly through the building. The results obtained from this analysis is compared with Salwathura.K.D working on V-bracing and Gallage.J.H working on diagonal bracing. Calculations show that Chevron bracing configuration with dampers reduce story displace- ment by 42% compared with diagonal bracing configuration with dampers for the five-story structure. For the ten-story structure Chevron has 35% reduction of story displacement compared with diagonal bracing configuration with dampers. For the twenty-story struc- ture Chevron has 7% reduction of story displacement compared with diagonal bracing.
