Abstract | This paper introduces the analysis of the efficiency of a Compression Free Device (CFD) for hybrid precast frame systems. The CFD is a device with a steel yielding coupon and a set of grips to allow the coupon to freely move during compression. The compression free behavior prevents the coupon from buckling and allows energy dissipation only in tension yielding. The analysis was done using SAP2000 with the modelling of the subassembly done as a two dimensional simple finite element model using shell elements. The analyses were performed as a series of non-linear time history analyses and as a non-linear reversed cyclic pushover analysis for a beam-column subassembly with the CFD modelled using multi-linear plastic link elements. Two sets of CFDs were used for energy dissipation, fixed on each face of the column. The performance of the CFD model was compared to the hybrid system without the CFD and also to a monolithic connection. The results indicated that the CFD was successful in reducing the movement of the elements during seismic events and during the pushover analysis and dissipated sufficient energy. The ability of the frame elements to show elastic behavior upto significant drift ratios was also observed through the analyses. |
