AbstractAircraft bird strikes are considered a great hazard both for the risk of fatal accidents and large economic losses. Since no airport can be completely free of birds their is good reason for safety precautions to be taken in .and around airports. The first available records of bird strikes at Bangkok International Airport, Thailand are for the year 1976 when as high as 17 incidents of bird strikes on aircrafts were recorded. During three periods from 1980 to 1982, based on local airline statistics, as high as 42 incidents of bird stri ke on aircrafts were recorded at the five international airports in Thailand - Bangkok, Chiang Mai , Hat Yai, Phuket and Suratthani. In 1981 , Thai Airways Co., Ltd .. reported 14 bird strikes incidents causing extensive losses to equipments. Birds that caused such air disasters in Bangkok International Airport were mostl y smal I birds especially gulls, lapwings, swallows and pigeons. It has also been noted that geographically, Thailand is located at the center of the flyways of migratory birds from neighboring countries. Recent data available with the International Civil A via ti on Organi zation, ICAO Bird strike information system (IBIS) for the period 1980 to 1995 indicate that 360 bird strikes were reported for Bangkok and five from Phuket. However, reports available with the Airport Authority of Thailand (AAT) indicate lower numbers at Bangkok and no reports in Phuket. Fmther, even in the ICAO report the bird type has been identified in only 35 of the reported strikes. These indicate that a better mechanism is required for feed back from out going and chartered aircrafts and some system for identifying the bird species involved in bird strikes here. Wat Phylom, a temple, located about I 0-15 miles from the north-western end of Bangkok International Airport is a place of bird concentration during the migratory months. During winter season September-January, migratory birds flock to the water ways around the temple and are then a major concern to the pilots fl ying in the area. Another period in which birds are attracted to areas around Bangkok's airport are on the days following soccer matches played under lights in the nearby stadium. Birds are attracted at this time because of the ava ilable worms and feed available following such activities.
