AbstractIn this project, the use of VLC to transmit and receive text messages has been examined and realised. Transmission of data was achieved by means of high brightness white Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) and reception of data through a silicon PIN photodiode. A VLC transmitter circuit was designed to transmit data while an existing VLC receiver was used to receive this data. Data was transmitted at a rate of 2 Mbps. The signal processing hardware was implemented on a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). Data was encoded using the ASCII code for character coding, and Manchester code for line coding. Instead of using coherent clock recovery by means of a Phase Locked Loop, an incoherent method was employed which, through edge detection, aligned the edges of the received encoded signal with the receiver clock. Data was recovered through the use of frame synchronization techniques. Data input was achieved through the use of a PS2 keyboard while received messages were displayed by means of a LCD display.
