AbstractSupplemental damping is becoming a progressively tested and consistent seismic design strategy, and with it has originated the development of building guidelines to include supple- mentally damped structures. Fluid Viscous Dampers are among top passive energy devices used for seismic retrofitting of structures. The placement of dampers is a critical design concern, as the distribution of damping may considerably affect a buildings dynamic re- sponse. Although building codes provides certain provisions, they do not prescribe a partic- ular method for optimal damper placement. Therefore this study provides insights to optimal placement of dampers with respect to the bracing configurations and damping coefficient dis- tribution. The bracing configurations of Chevron, Inverted Chevron (V-shape) and Diagonal systems are compared in a 5, 10 and 20 storied basis. Thus the implementation of Viscous Fluid Dampers in Chevron arrangement proves to provide better seismic retrofitting for all three frame types, highlighting the performance of 10 storied frame reducing top story re- sponses of the VFD implemented frame by more than 50% in all considered storey response indicators. The optimal damper placement method of Stiffness Proportional Damping proves to be effective providing effective storey response reductions compared to uniform damping coefficient distribution.
