AbstractThis study is a comparison of NGO-and government-assisted CF in kampong Chhnang province and religious-group-assisted CF in Svay Rieng province. Focus is given to CF projects, people's perception and attitude towards CF, and strengths and weaknesses of the projects. Two villages from each project were selected for study. The study is made use of primary data obtained by survey, RRA and direct observation and secondary data obtained from listing literature review, documents, and records. Kampong Chhnang CF projects has a nursery located in an appropriate site which can produce more than enough seedlings for the yearly planting of 50 ha. The nursery in Svay Rieng is unable to produce enough seedlings for 20 ha yearly planting. The Kampong Chhnang CF project is managed by an expatriate expert member o f COCERN, the CF manager, CF staff (counterpart from DOF), and members of Plantation Committee and VFMCs. In Svay Rieng, it is undertaken by a Buddhist group (local NGO called Shenti Sena). There is no representative from DOF. In Kampong Chhnang nearly three quarters of the hhs depend on the forest fo r their supply of fuelwood, while in Svay Rieng only 25% of hhs depend on fo rest. People's perception and attitude towards CF in Kampong Chhnang appears to be better than in Svay Rieng. People's participation is also better in Kampong Chhnang than Svay Rieng. It was also found that CF in Kampong Chhnang has more strong points than in Svay Rieng. So CF in Kampong Chhnang is relatively more successful than in Svay Rieng. Recommendations addressed to the DOF, CONCERN and Shenti Sena to improve CF practice in Cambodia were given.
