Abstract | The purpose of this study is to understand how the quality of asphalt mixtures can be evalu- ated using the Superpave Gyratory Compactor. It involves the determination of compaction indices CDI and TDI, and how do they affect the volumetric properties of asphalt mix design and the performance of an asphalt pavement. The relevant tests using the SGC were done according to AASHTO and ASTM standards. The report contains descriptive information about the testing methods, methods of analysis, results and conclusion. The SGC instead of the Marshall method was introduced to evaluate the quality of asphalt mixtures, because SGC not only concentrates on the volumetric properties, but also portrays the performance of an asphalt pavement as well. Performance of an asphalt pavement is very important, as those parameters provide a picture of the asphalt pavements ability to withstand distresses such as rutting, permanent deformation and fatigue cracking. The compaction indices CDI and TDI showed significant results with changing % AC by weight of aggregates. They also showed some good correlations with performance parameters at different temperatures and traffic volumes for two different layers of asphalt namely binder and wearing course. This research provides extensive information on the idea of compaction indices, how to calculate them and their role in the mix design of asphalt mixtures and performance of asphalt pavements. |
