AbstractThe future service improvement and planning of public transp01tation system are need to examine the existing role of each mode which provide for people's mobility in Khon Kaen city. The present users attitudes and their opinions toward the service are the impo1tant information which guides to evaluate the better services in the future. This research attempted to investigate the user, system, and driver characteristics of public transpo1t system operating in the municipal area. It emphasized on the minibuses, tuktuks, and cycle rickshaw. This is because of the fact that there are public transp01t modes serving for the most daily urban trips. In addition, the urban air-conditioned buses (new mode just implemented in September 1996) were also investigated in this study. However, owing to the limited time available, this research is precluded detail study of the operation and its service characteristics. It was found that the public transpo1t users belong to the active working ages, thus study work, and personal business are the dominant trip purposes. Minibuses play an impo1tant role in public transport rather than other modes as they provide high frequent service with fixed route and cheaper fare rate. The taxi-like services of tuk-tuks and cycle rickshaws were unpopular in K.hon Kaen city due to the available services of minibuses and also commutors have their own vehicles, especially the motorcycles. However, the seventeen minibus routes did not provide their services to all paits of the municipal area. They were concentrated mostly along the streets which have more concentration of people to use their services. The minibus routes also did not reach some residential areas, especially the ones with low volume of commutors. Driving public transpott vehicles is the regular occupation of most drivers. With the exception of minibus drivers, the other public transpott drivers normally rent the vehicles from the operators.
