AbstractA general-purpose package is developed for the static analysis of highway bridge decks based on finite element method. The application of recently modified degenerated sixnode thin-walled element (Pokharel, 1993), known as TW6, is presented through the modeling of bridge decks. A preprocessor module is implemented by 32-bit Visual Basic 4.0 to utilize graphical user interface (GUI) environment in WINDOWS 95 operating system. Extended version of finite element analysis program (XFEAP) served as package's engine is recompiled by 32-bit PowerStation FORTRAN. Therefore, this package is also taken the advantage of 32-bit environment to expedite overall operation. Preprocessor module can provide the convenient data preparation under step by step data input. Standard trucks and lane loads according to AASHTO 1992 are used as standard highway loads. These highway loads are provided in the comprehensive manner that user can easily handle trial and error problems in placing highway loads to find the maximum effects. In addition, Prestressing forces can be conveniently applied as equivalent prestressing forces in each section. By means of this development, the analysis of highway bridge decks will no longer be extravagant as in the past. Numerical examples are employed to test the validity and range of this application. Plane grid system is also study in comparison to check the extension of this package to plane grid system. Finally, this proposed study is staged as the prototype of the new aspect of development of finite element application. Further study can utilize this module to extend the range of program to different types of bridge decks.
