AbstractThis study covers the analysis of the existing operating system of a spare parts warehouse and investigates the optimal storage policy, order picking policy and the optimal layout design for a manual order-picking warehouse for a computer supply company. Two layout designs have been considered. Different storage policies with proposed and existing layouts are evaluated in detail and the optimal layout design with appropriate storage policies are obtained. Sensitivity analysis has been performed based on the recommended internal layout. Order picking problem, usually modeled as a Traveling Salesman Problem, is applied to the proposed layout. A PC based program is developed for assisting the operating system. One of the layout designs with dedicated storage policy is recommended for this spare parts warehouse. The mixed strategy of "mid-point" and "largest-gap" is recommended for the operation of this spare parts warehouse.
