Abstract | Genetic algorithms (GAs) were used to determine critical truck combinations that gave the highest stresses on girders of bridge decks. AASHTO HS20-44 trucks were used as loads upon standard traffic lanes on girder-typed highway bridges, Don Muang Tollway and the elevated road over Klong Prapa (a water supply canal). An interactive program was developed as a tool of the study. These problems were suitable for GAs since they were unconstrained ones that can be solved directly by GAs without any penalty function. One-point, two-point and 20% uniform crossover methods were employed in the study. One-point crossover showed a little lower performance than other two methods. Don Muang Tollway problem was tested with three different population sizes (5, 20 and 50). The population sizes of 20 and 50 yielded similar behavior but the population size of five was insufficient. Mutation rate was fixed while crossover rates varied. No detectable differences were found from two different rates (0.6 and 0.8) which might result from narrow range of parameters employed. Some data suggested preference of high crossover rate in large population size and lower crossover rate in small population size. All three tested examples yielded good results. |
