AbstractThis study concerns the combinatorial, layout design problem and product sequencing problem, for a flow shop manufacturing line. The study aim to search the optimal solution and finally make suggestions for improvement the performance measure in that line. The study is conducted for an automotive parts manufacturing company in Thailand, that is Thai Engineering Products Co., Ltd. (Subsidiary of the Siam Cement Group). The results, that have been obtained, are based on actual data supplied by the company for the period of four months oftest run of the selected line. The model for layout problem has been evaluated by simulation using Factory CAD, Factory FLOW and Factory PLAN package software. The model for sequencing problem is simulated by SIMPLE++ software. The objective of each problem is selected based on the real need of the company by interviewing with the Machining Plant Manager and the engineers of the company. The optimal solution approach by a genetic algorithm approach and random search approach. The results of layout problem get from running the Factory FLOW and Factory PLAN software and calculate the objective function manually. The results of sequencing problem get from running simulation software and calculate the objective function automatically. Finally, after this study the analysis and some appropriate suggestions have been outlined for the company to improve the require objective in each problem.
