AbstractDesign is a creative process that involves diverse areas of expe1tise and numerous decisions that have major impacts on project. It is a difficult task for a design firm to have an accurate design cost estimating. Especially in present situation, engineering design firms are facing a changing and more difficult business environment then they cannot afford to consistently overestimate or underestimate design costs. Although accurate design estimates seem essential to the success of the design firms, the techniques and procedures of engineering estimates are not widely studied. This study attempted to find out the perception and performance of the design firms related to design cost estimates. Various estimating methods are described, including conceptual estimates, detailed or activity estimates, and parametric estimates. Almost all of the data were collected by the questionnaires distributed to more than sixty design firms located in Bangkok area and the collected data was analysed by simple statistical model in order to define the imp01tant factors that affect the cost of the design, the accuracy of each estimating method, the relationship between the type of construction and type of estimate i:nethod, along with the reasons to select the estimate method of the design firms. This study also research on how design estimates are actually developed in today's engineering firm. In Thailand, design cost estimate method used by design firms can be classified into two major categories. First, design cost is estimated based on the total man-hrs/months required to complete a project. Second, design cost is estimated based on a percentage of the construction cost.
