AbstractThe need for a quick and fairly accurate estimating tool has been long felt. It is even more pressing in the present context of complex and large size projects. Since many largescale projects have been constructed and are likely to_ be the trend in future in Bangkok, the attempt to develop an expert estimating tool is appropriate and relevant. It is not only impo1iant to execute accurate estimate but the time factor is also imp01iant, since it may be required to come up with a fairly accurate estimate at short notice. Conventional systems could possibly ensure the accuracy but the work itself will be time consuming and costly. Therefore, the concept of a knowledge-based system will make an attempt to replace the conventional system with a less time consuming package that will serve the purpose of estimating. Moreover, with the availability of a number of software usage to develop the package the task may no longer be impossible. Therefore, an attempt was made to enhance the capability of the already pioneered step of Radomdej Taksana who had developed "A pre-design of cost estimating model for high-rise building in Bangkok" in 1994. There are few enhanced features to the KSDE. Some of them are: It has become more user friendly; help file has been fuiiher elaborated; the technical terms and applications of related subject have been utilized in computerized library namely technical library. Finally, some useful suggestion contexts which are the outstanding function of knowledge-based systems, have been incorporated in the system. There can be no end to futiher development of knowledge-based systems. This is especially true since there are rapid changes taking place everyday in the field of computer science. This package may not provide solution to every problem. But it is expected that there will be fuiiher research in future to develop a fully comprehensive package.
