AbstractIn the current construction atmosphere, utilization of subcontractors to perform works rather than general contractors' own workforce is a common practice. Therefore, subcontractors play a significant role for project accomplishment. In spite of the importance of subcontractors, little is publicized about subcontracting practices as well as significant decision factors for selecting subcontractors. The study was conducted by focusing on these subjects. The two organization types participated in this study are general contractor and subcontractor. Data including subcontracting features, subcontract conditions, and existence of partnering relationships, was obtained through personal inte1views. The results provide general terms of subcontracting practices and the types of work that pa1tnering relationships tend to exist. To determine the significant decision factors for selecting subcontractors, an analysis of mean impact responses by organization types has been performed. In addition, the mean impact responses of the organization types were evaluated for statistical significance. The results reveal that the significant decision factors are 'honesty & fair-dealing', 'experience', and 'past performance'. The perceptions of general contractors and subcontractors towards most decision factors are not statistically different. Conclusions and recommendations for fmther study are also highlighted.
