Abstract | The planning and control of information system play a major role in the today's construction projects. It can determine the success or failure of construction project through the quality of information available to the decision makers. The IT is exploited in various organizations to reduce project cost either by improving the productivity in construction projects or by improving the construction-management function through management tools to base decision making. However, many construction organizations fail to implement and utilize their IS and IT effectively. One of the key reasons is that. the organizations praise information technology but ignoring proper way of managing information for project activities. This study investigates the current application and management perception of information system and computer application about project planning and control. Questionnaires and interviews are conducted to collect data from several construction organizations. The collected data are analyzed in terms of management perception toward benefits and impact of IT implementation, and computer application in project planning and control. Analysis of the difference in management perception toward benefits and impact of IT implementation between Thai and foreign construction organizations is also included in this study. The study reveals that most Thai construction organizations focus on direct benefits and less attention to indirect benefits. Moreover, the impacts of IT implementation have more influence in Thai construction organization than that of foreign ones. Some recommendations for well designed information system and user training are implemented to improve the efficiency of the existing project planning and control. Thai construction organizations are in the initial stage of IT implementation. They need the properly designed IS and trained staff to perform project planning and control effectively. Establishing the detailed schedule and estimate are also required for control purpose. |
