AbstractCost estimating plays a major role amongst several construction project management activities. The quality of an estimate can result in the success or failure of construction projects. Apart from the bidding purpose, the information obtained from cost estimating process can be used to support the cost controlling process. The quality of an estimate depends on a number of factors. Among them, two major factors are accuracy and timeliness. It has been realized that the application of computer can be integrated with the estimating process to improve accuracy, and to reduce the processing time required in preparing an estimate. Despite of the advancement of computer technology, the application of computerized estimating system is still considerably limited due to high cost of system, and difficulty in adapting the ready made system to a company. Due to the characteristic of the data involved in an estimate process, the concept of relational database is proposed. This study concentrates the possible solution of above problems by enhancing a relational database management system to develop a computerized estimating application system. The relational database management system used in the study is Microsoft Access version 2.0. The difficulty in adopting such database management system to an estimating system is examined. The framework in developing an estimate system is also established. An estimating database system is developed based on such framework.
