Abstract | The business environment is becoming dynamic and more complex than in the past. The new Advanced Manufacturing Technologies (AMTs) which are characterized by their extraordinary automation, flexibility and integration will meet this challenges However, much has been reported about the inexpierences and lacks of information to attain the expected level of benefits of AMTs in many manufacturing enterprises. Especially, in Small and Medium sized Enterprises ( SMEs) where AMTs seem to be the tools to compete against large enterprises by finding niches and quick response to the markets. This study attempts to develop an integrated model for managing AMT. The model examines the introduction of CAD/CAM technology in the firms throughout acquisition, implementation and commercialization stages. The model is developed for strategic and operational management in the firms. Four case studies in companies that have implemented AMT were conducted to test the applicability of the model. It appears that the model is suitable for practical applications. Many managerial and technological issues have been tested with managers of the manufacturing firms. Much has been improved in the firms in order to introduce the AMTs in both strategic and operational management. Based on the findings, some recommendations regarding introduction of AMTs for managers of the firm level and for related government officials have been proposed. |
