AbstractThe objective of the study is to examine perception of miners in Quang Ninh province, Vietnam, about the canteen services in mining enterprises that catered for them in many years, then to find out gaps between what is currently available and what miners wants and are willing to pay for. Two underground mines and two open-air mines in Hon Gai and Cam Pha - two big towns of Quang Ninh, were surveyed. The pattern found is that people were not satisfied with the current quality of canteen services, and they would like to have a better one. The market is potential with a high number of miners, and an increasing purchasing power, rather profitable and attractive for suppliers to invest. There are alternatives to upgrade the canteen systems in mines. The first one is through reforming the management style in canteens, but still using old staff. Opening a bid to find a new supplier is another way. The third alternative is to allow many suppliers to come and cater for miners at the same time. A compromising solution is strongly advisable for mines: both holding a bid to select external suppliers and allowing internal suppliers also cater for miners in a competitive environment with external suppliers are beneficial for miners as well as for mining enterprises.
