AbstractThe experience of many developed and developing countries very clearly indicate the contribution made by the Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) towards economic growth and equity in income distribution. In some developing countries, employment generation has been dramatically boosted through the promotion and development of the SMEs. However, the situation of the SMEs is one of a rather loose integration within the mainstream of the economies, due to the reason, at the early stages of SME formation, they remain risky, so funds from formal . financial markets are seldom available. To encourage SMEs growth, governments in many countries have taken special schemes which most of the time include soft loans to SMEs. Intermediaries and special support organizations are involved in developing such services to the sector in developing countries like Pakistan. However, such government schemes failed to stimulate expected growth of SMEs. Problems existed in functioning of intermediaries and support organizations. The objective of this study is to identify problems faced by Pakistani SMEs, and find out solutions to these problems. The manufacturing sector based in Karachi has been chosen for conducting survey. The study evolves with the understanding of the financing situation in the country and the problems and constraints of the SME sector were later recorded and interpreted. The study concludes with a set of recommendations to overcome the problems identified.
