AbstractThis study considers the development of agroindustry under the umbrella of the economic reform which began in late 1970s in China. The main purpose of the study was to investigate the role, problem and prospects of agroindustry development, by examining the effectiveness of the entrepreneurship as well as the policies of the government agencies involved in the development of agroindustry. The role of agroindustry in the developing countries has been described. The historical development of agroindustry in China as well as its contribution to the national economy, employment and as an effective instrument for regional development by utilizing the local resource has been outlined. To meet the research objectives, both primary and secondary information were gathered and analyzed. Personal interviews with entrepreneurs and their enterprises in Qi county and government officials and various agencies relevant to the agroindustry both at provincial and regional level were carried out using structured questionnaires and the researcher's own experiences. Furthermore, the agroindustry in China is developing fast after the economic reform (1978) and takes an important role in the national economy. Most of the agroindustries have collective ownership and the major capital resources are shareholders. Nearly 90 percent of the raw materials was from local resource and more than half of the market at or above the national level. The entrepreneurs are mostly 30-50 years old and nearly 70 percent of them have the background of government official. The government tried to offer more assistance to enterprises. The trend of development of agroindustry is positive, but enterprises still faced the problems of capital and power shortage, market competition, raw material price fluctuation and out of date equipment, etc. From the study of the social economic environment and policies, it can be known that the future of agroindustry is bright. Finally, some general recommendations for further development of agroindustry have been suggested.
