AbstractA locally made rice stripper harvester, manufactured in Indonesia, was tested to evaluate its field performance in order to assess its acceptance by the Indonesian farmers. The best performance was achieved when the machine was operated in dry land with a forward speed of 3.5 km/hr. The rotor speed should be 995 rpm and the nose should be 20 cm below the panicle. Operating the machine with speeds higher than this, would make it difficult for the operator to control the machine. In addition, it would result in higher breakage of the kernels. The shatter loss decreased with an increase of forward speed and rotor speed. The field capacity of the machine was found to be 0.077 ha/hr. More than 98 % of the intake grain was perfectly threshed. The total machine loss was 2.08 percent, with a major part of this loss being a shattering loss. Requirement of the labor when using this machine was 32 man hour/ha. The material other than grain was 26 percent. The fuel consumption was 0.986 liter/hr, and the effective width was 0.98 m. The field efficiency of the machine was 22.9 %. This efficiency can be increased by reducing the unloading time.
