AbstractThe performance of a silt pump, being used in Vietnam, was evaluated for pumping artificial slurry. The pump was first evaluated for pumping water to establish the base performance curves. The pump was then tested with 5 samples of soil slurry of 7, 13, 18, 21 and 23 percentage of total solid content by weight (%TS) at two total static heads, i.e., 2.0 m and 2.5 musing four speeds of 1300, 1400, 1500 and 1550 rpm. For different conditions, the pump delivered maximum efficiency when operated at speed near 1500 rpm. When the %TS of slurry varied from 7 to 23 and the total head varied from 2.0 m to 2.5 m, the maximum efficiency varied from 31.99 % to 26.47%, discharge flow rate varied from 21.56 l/s to 20.88 l/s, the total static head varied from 7.91 m to 8.35 m and the power input varied from 4.91 kW to 6.46 kW. The performance of the pump was effected greatly by %TS, especially at high %TS of soil slurry, but not significant difference was found as the total static head varied from 2.0 m to 2.5 m. The pump was found most suitable for pumping slurry from 7 to 13 %TS. For these conditions, the efficiency of the pump was higher and the power input to the pump was lower than for other conditions. The performance evaluation of the pump showed that the pump needs to be improved by redesign of its construction. Field tests to assess the overall performance of the pump are needed.
