AbstractRadio wave propagation could be characterized by multipath propagation due to reflection, diffraction and scattering of radio waves. The effect of multipath propagation makes the fluctuation of received signal, that is fading which degrades the performance of the system. The Rake receiver is used to combat the effect of multipath propagation. In this study, the performance of the rake receiver is evaluated in terms of bit error rate (BER) for the Rayleigh fading channel model on the downlink of IS-95 CDMA system. The Doppler effect due to the motion of mobile station is also considered. Simulation is performed in Matlab. Performance of the Rake receiver is investigated for different number of users and for different energy per bit to noise ratio (Ei/No). BER performance for both the receiving processes, with selecting the strongest components among arriving multipath components and considering only the first four arriving components without selecting the strongest components are also investigated. Moreover, the performance of the rake receiver to accomplish the soft hand-off function between two base stations are investigated.
