AbstractErbium-doped fiber Amplifiers are regarded as having a major impact in a variation of applications involving optical transmission system in both long-haul, high capacity links as well as the local-access networks. This is due to their compatibility with the fiber networks, low insertion loss, polarization insensitivity, high gain levels and near quantum-limit noise performance. In this work, the performance of optically preamplified intensity modulationdirect detection(IM-DD) receiver is investigated in terms of bit error rate and sensitivity by employing semiclassical theory coupled with Gaussian approximation method. The analysis provides closed-form expression for both sensitivity and bit error rate. The signal energy predicted by this work is 38 photon per bit at BER=10ยท9 . The work demonstrates the potential of optical preamplified IM-DD receiver by giving results which surpass the APD receiver. Finally, we use the result of optical preamplified IM-DD receiver to implement for video distribution system in distinct of network topologies. The receiver sensitivity and the number of users derivation are carried out. The final result is presented in terms the number of users and optical power budget. Indeed, the advantages of such receiver can be used to form the large scale video distribution system.
