AbstractResearch Studies Project Report (M.B.A.) - Asian Institute of Technology, 1996Situated between latitudes 6° N to 11° S and longitudes 94 ° E to 141 ° E the Republic of Indonesia consists of more than 17, 000 islands with a total area of 1. 9 million sq km and population close to 200 million people. In addition to being an archipelago, other geographical features such as mountains and swamps are handicaps to easy communications. This research study investigates the VSAT network that is applied to rural telecommunication network. The VSAT networks are planned based on telecominunication demand in year 2005. The VSAT networks use Palapa C-1 satellite as a main repeater communication satellite. The network is based on a star network. To decide antenna diameter and HPA power of antenna, the satellite link budget is calculated at 10·7 Bit Error rate, 64 kbps information bit rate and BPSK modulation techniques. Rain attenuation is calculated by using CCIR model with 0.3% time of the year of the rain rate exceeding 34 mm/hour.
