Abstract | Remote sensing act1v1ty by using a Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite have been established for long time. The Low Earth Orbit satellite platform offer some advantages such as regularity of coverage and a scale of coverage where an aircraft platform can not achieve it. It should be remembered that the Low Earth Orbit Satellite is only operated as remote sensing satellite not for usual communications purposes till now. The emerging technology which will come from proposed Low Earth Orbit Satellite Communication Systems that offer some services such as : telephony, fax and data, paging and positioning, it is necessary to investigate the possibility of using proposed LEOS Communication Systems not only for communications purposes but also for remote sensing activity. It implies that the satellite becomes a multitasking satellite. This research study presents a preliminary investigation of the applicability of LEOS Communication Systems for remote sensing purposes. An investigation of a revisit time is emphasized, because these parameter is important to design the kinds of mission provided by remote sensing satellite. Sun-synchronous orbit, altitude of the satellite, sensors carried by the satellite are also considered. The result shows that one of the eight proposed LEOS Communication Systems which are used as a model of computation has more prospect to be used as a remote sensing satellite as well as a communications satellite |
