AbstractThe government promoted rubber plantation has led to the widespread land conversion to monoculture rubber cultivation in N011heast Thailand. To understand what household characteristics influence the decision making in selecting the crops for cultivation and its impacts on sustainability, the study was conducted in No11heast Thailand covering Nong Khai and Bueng Kan province. The study analyzed land-use change between 1993 and 2012. The farm household characteristics were analyzed using the survey data of 2013 to find out socioeconomic factors as potential proximate and underlying causes of land use change. Future land-uses were projected three scenarios. Government's support and high price played key roles in encouraging farmers adopting rubber. Farmers' experiences, age of a household head, land security, the size of the paddy area owned, and off-farm income influence the conversion to rubber. The reduction of paddy fields to rubber certainly lead to reduced total paddy production and may even affect food security of smallholders who are involved in subsistence farming as the major source of livelihood. Rubber cultivation has both negative and positive impacts on farmers' livelihood capitals. Household income has increased constantly which is a positive gain in financial capital. 76% of new rubber plantations are in environmentally unsuitable marginal areas, and this may be a negative effect on natural capital with regard to reduced ecological functions or degradation. Rubber cultivation in paddy field caused loss of paddy areas to a great extent in the study area. This eventually will lead to decreased paddy production and affecting food supply of household level. The land use projection for 2032 is done on the basis of three scenarios with the Dyna-CLUE model to protect paddy. Under the scenario 2 and 3 can control rubber cultivation and protect paddy field more than business as usual scenario.
