AbstractThe mission-critical environment in the Navy's operations makes the intraship system communication require more reliability and stability to keep on operations. Shipboard Local Area Network (LAN) handles the communication for all systems aboard ship. This thesis evolves with the Shipboard LAN architecture for the Royal Thai Navy (RTN) ships. The high fault tolerant topology with high reliability LAN enables to fulfill the requirements of RTN's missions. Fiber Distributed Data Interface (FDDn, a 100 Mbits/sec high speed LAN, is chosen to be the main backbone of shipboard communication systems. High fault tolerant of its dual counter rotating rings configuration also increases the reliability of network system. The dual homing connection technique resolves the single point of failure in the network structure. This hookup architecture provides the reliability improvement with trade-off extra connections. The supplementary of Fast Ethernet, the improved 100 Mbits/sec LAN, also enables to complete the data transmission among stations as fast as FDDI. The simulation is a supporting tool to analyze the behavior of the designed network. Network parameters such as payload, and transmission rate were varied to demonstrate their effects on the performance of Shipboard LAN. In addition, it is shown in this thesis that the designed Shipboard LAN is able to cope with the requirements of present communication among intraship systems for RTN combatants.
