Abstract | The new quality of multimedia (MM) applications concerns the handling of various types of media, which are timely combined for use in presentation for the user. This implies stringent requirements from the underlying systems to support requested Quality of Service (QOS). Generally, MM applications provide a wide range of QOS. Hence users must be able to specify a desirable QOS depending on their needs, end-system characteristics, and financial capability. Certain QOS parameters contradict to each other, i.e., high resolution may lead to high data rate; therefore, it is necessary to have a formal specification of QOS requirements which gives their meaning precisely. Furthermore, this formal specification can be used for negotiation and renegotiation of QOS among various components of a distributed multimedia system in order to seek for overall system's commitment to fulfill the user's requested QOS. This thesis is an attempt to develop a formal way of specifying QOS requirements for distributed MM presentational applications using Conceptual Graphs (CGs) and apply it to the QOS negotiation process in order to show its usefulness. QOS specification and negotiation are the two processes among the QOS management processes with great diversity i.e., most other processes are similar to the QOS negotiation process. Thus the feasibility of using a powerful and unified language, CGs, to model all the QOS management processes is shown. |
