AbstractThis work presents a framework for constraint management in distributed temporal databases in heterogeneous environments. The framework is composed of three components. The first is an interface that describes how a data item in each site can be read or written by a constraint manager. The second is a strategy. The strategies in the framework illustrate the algorithm that is used by the constraint manager to maintain the constraint. The third part of the framework is a guarantee of the correctness of certain constraints in the distributed temporal databases. In this work, the Demarcation Protocol of Barbard and Garcia-Molina (1992) is selected to manage the linear arithmetic inequality constraints in distributed temporal databases. Unlike traditional protocols, the demarcation protocol can solve the problem of high overhead during protocol execution. This protocol can maintain simple arithmetic inequality constraints over data items that are stored at different sites. We create a new strategy to maintain a constraint X = Y because the Demarcation Protocol is not suitable for this kind of constraint. By the examples, we show that our framework can maintain a complex constraint by splitting the complex constraint into many simple constraints that can be managed by our framework. So it is possible to use this framework in real system.
